'She's so swishy in her satin and tat - In her frock coat and bipperty-bopperty hat
Oh God I could do better than that' - David Bowie Queen Bitch

Roxy Music, Bowie, and anything chic became our motto, things I recall:

Being on the dole - not wanting to work

  • Life was a round of clubbing and planning what to wear next time, dossing listening to music.
  • Pencil skirts & suits
  • Perm , one sided hair cuts 'Veronica Lake'
  • 40's style sunglasses
  • Diamanté Jewellery
  • Fox Furs
  • Stockings
  • Pill box hats
  • Bobs
  • Smart 40's suits
  • Stilettos, winkle pickers
  • Long gloves - no fingered gloves
  • Boob tubes
  • Drainpipe jeans
  • wrap over dresses
  • Mohair jumpers (handmade by self) - lime green and blue
  • Bus Stop (shop in Manchester) influenced by the store assistants in there
  • Bene Blacks hairdressers in Warrington
  • Started to experiment with colour and bleach on my hair

Me and Vanessa had become seasoned jumble sale queens - in fact this was my nickname at home ! We used to scour them on a weekly basis and get a whole hoard of goodies, all ready to customise or ready to wear. I had a full wardrobe of 40's clothing at the time. I started to make and customise (or create as I called it at the time) my own clothing to try and look original. Each week had to wear something different, no outfit could be worn twice.  Me and Vanessa (Partner in crime with Mel Bartley 'the only gay in the village')

Went to see Bryan Ferry on Feb 17th 1977 @ Opera House in Manchester, Chris Spedding played guitar- recall wearing shirt & tie,, black satin drainpipes, high heeled boots, fox fur, black jacket and beret. I thought I looked the bee's knees, after the concert we dashed outside to greet Bryan Ferry coming out of the stage door, we were the only ones there, he gave us a wave and I left my mark on his limo (in the dirt saying 'Bryan forever')

Favourite records of the time: late 1976 early 77

  • Back in the night - Dr Feelgood
  • Love is the drug - Roxy Music
  • Walk on the wild side - Lou Reed
  • Let's stick together - Bryan Ferry
  • Queen Bitch - David Bowie
